Funding gap threatens weekend meals for Spokane children

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Bite 2 Go program, crucial for delivering weekend meals to children in several counties, is facing a funding shortfall. Second Harvest is working to bridge this gap to ensure no child goes hungry over the weekend.

Regular donors to the Bite 2 Go program have contributed less this year due to their own financial constraints, explained Steve Durham, vice president of philanthropy at Second Harvest. “We’ve got a gap that represents about 300 students,” Durham said. These students rely on Bite 2 Go for weekend food support, but current funding is insufficient.

Since our identifying the shortfall Nonstop Local launched a fundraising program to help. In just a week’s time, the community has shown remarkable generosity with donations exceeding $19,000 in a week, but more is needed.

Durham stresses the importance of the program, saying, “Our goal is to take that really heavy burden off kids of worrying about where their next meal is going to come from.” He highlighted the community’s strong response to the need, describing it as a “Spokane thing” where neighbors help neighbors.

All funds donated to Bite 2 Go go directly to feeding children, with no administrative fees, said Durham. “Every single penny that comes in is restricted to food and food only.” The program aims to provide nutrition and support to children during a critical point in their development.

Durham also pointed out the emotional impact of the program: “When a kid gets a Bite 2 Go bag, he or she knows that someone out there cared enough to provide this for them.” This message of care and support is as vital as the food itself.

The program relies on a network of volunteers and donors united by the belief that no child should go hungry. “It also keeps us all focused on the good that a community can do,” Durham stated, underscoring the program’s community-driven nature.
