Free tax help available at Spokane County libraries with deadline approaching

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — Tax Day is eight days away, and Spokane County libraries are offering free help to residents scrambling to meet the April 15 deadline.

All 10 Spokane County library locations have tax forms available and offer free printing services. Library staff will help people navigate to the IRS website and print what they need.

“It’s a week out until tax day and if you’re like me and you haven’t filed yet, you might be freaking out a little bit,” said Stacey Goddard, Spokane County Library public services manager. “So if you need to print off a bunch of tax forms you can come in and do it free of charge.”

The libraries have partnered with AARP volunteers for decades to provide free tax preparation services.

“We provide the space for their volunteers to come in and prepare taxes as a free service to the community,” Goddard said. “People are walking out, they don’t have to figure out their taxes on their own, and they know that they are done correctly.”

A 2024 Tax Foundation survey found 61% of Americans do not know basic tax concepts related to income filing.

The Northeast Community Center is seeing the impact these programs can have on the community. Executive Director Jene Ray said the service reduces stress for families.

“Taxes are scary, and so having somebody trusted in our community to walk you through the paperwork is really important,” Ray said. “We are decreasing that fear or anxiety over taxes.”
