SPOKANE, Wash. – The former prosecuting attorney for Spokane County, Donald C. Brockett, died on November 14 at the age of 89 according to an obituary from the Holy Cross of Spokane.
Brockett served as the prosecuting attorney for Spokane County from 1970 to 1994.
“Don lived a life defined by quiet strength, unwavering integrity, and a deep devotion to his family,” the obituary said. “The respected prosecuting attorney for more than 34 years, he spent his career fighting for justice while always finding time to teach his children and grandchildren the value of hard work and kindness.”
Brockett was well known for prosecuting the 1981 rape trial of the notorious “South Hill rapist” Kevin Coe, which led to four convictions. Three of them were later overturned.
Coe’s mother, Ruth Coe, was convicted in 1982 for hiring a hit man against the trial judge and Brockett, the prosecuting attorney, after her son’s convictions.
Brockett graduated from Gonzaga Law School in 1961.
“He is survived by his devoted wife of 66 years, Jean, his children Tina, Angela, Gina, and Craig, his 13 grandkids, 20 great grandkids,1 great-great grandchild, and a wide circle of family and friends,” the obituary reads.
