MISSOULA, Mont. – The USDA Forest Service has announced a significant investment of over $8.7 million to help North Idaho and Montana communities reduce wildfire risk.

The funds, part of the Community Wildfire Defense grant awards, are designed to support communities with limited resources facing high wildfire risk.

“These grants are about putting resources in the hands of those that know their lands and communities best, so that they can better protect their families, businesses, infrastructure and the future of our shared landscape,” Secretary Rollins said.

Forest Service Chief Tom Schultz highlighted the need for collaboration, stating, “No single organization can tackle the severe fire conditions we face today. It is imperative that we work together to protect our forest and communities.”

The Idaho Department of Lands will receive $7.5 million for the Shoshone I-90 Hazardous Fuels Project. Missoula County will receive $1,268,548 for planning a wildfire-adapted community.
