Flu season and storm cause blood shortage; Donors needed now

SPOKANE, Wash. – The American Red Cross is experiencing a significant blood shortage following a severe winter storm that swept through much of the United States.

The organization reports a notable 35 percent decline in blood supply this month, exacerbated by an intense flu season.

Lawrence from the Red Cross highlighted the impact of the storm, saying, “We saw more than 350 blood drives that were shut down between Oklahoma and Maine, and that translates to about 10,000 units of blood and platelets that patients were relying on.”

The Red Cross is urging those who are feeling well and can safely travel to consider donating blood. “If you are feeling well and you’re able to safely travel, we really encourage you to make an appointment to donate,” Lawrence said.

The organization is in need of all blood types, with significant shortages of A negative, B negative, and platelets.

Those interested in helping can donate in Spokane. The Red Cross is offering $20 e-gift cards to donors who contribute before February 28.
