WASHINGTON – Influenza-related deaths among U.S. children have reached a peak not seen in nearly 15 years. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least 216 deadly cases were reported this flu season. This marks the highest number of pediatric deaths since the 2009-2010 season, when nearly 300 cases were confirmed.
Health officials have pointed to misinformation about vaccines as a significant factor contributing to the rise in deaths. The CDC stated that vaccinations for both children and adults have declined since the COVID-19 pandemic.
Overall in Washington state, there have been 435 flu deaths this season, with three of those being children. Idaho reported a total of 86 flu deaths among both adults and children, and Montana reported 64 deaths.
