Flu activity has reached unprecedented levels this season, with hospitalizations and deaths continuing to increase. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) expects this trend to persist for several weeks.
The CDC estimates there have been at least 15 million flu illnesses, 180,000 hospitalizations and 7,400 deaths this season. More than a dozen states have reported flu activity levels in the highest category tracked by the agency.
CDC data published last week revealed that flu-like activity in the United States has reached the highest level on record since tracking began about 30 years ago.
