Flooding in Kittitas County posing health and safety risks

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – Flooding in parts of Kittitas County has prompted health and safety advisories.

In Ellensburg, Irene Rinehart Riverfront Park has significant flooding. Police have advised staying out of the park due to safety risks. Walking paths and river access points are under water, and the boat launch parking lot is closed.

The Kittitas County Public Health Department (KCPHD) and the Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office have also warned that flood waters can pose health risks, including exposure to infectious diseases and chemical hazards.

Residents whose well heads have been submerged should avoid consuming water from them until testing confirms it is safe. KCPHD advises using bottled water or boiling water for at least one minute before use for drinking or cooking.

Septic systems should not be used until flood waters recede. Using them prematurely can cause water to back up into homes. Opening or pumping septic tanks while the soil is saturated is also discouraged, as it can damage the system.

For specific questions about wells or septic systems, residents can contact KCPHD at 509-962-7515.
