AUBURN, Wash. – A cafe owner is Auburn is working to support the community after recent floods devastated the area.
Karrar Hashem, owner of Lune To Go along Auburn Way, shared the impact the floods had on his business.
“All the equipment we have. All the fridges, freezers, all the equipment we use. Even the espresso machines, they all don’t work. Everything has been underwater,” Hashem said.
His cafe, like many businesses and homes across western Washington, suffered significant damage from the flooding. Hashem estimates that losses could exceed $100,000.
Despite the setback, Hashem’s outlook shifted after sharing the damage online and receiving overwhelming support.
“Put emotions aside, let’s put our sadness and crying aside and let’s go out in the community and do something where we can help,” Hashem said.
Last Friday, Hashem and his team spent $500 on essentials such as underwear, socks and gloves, which local shelters identified as high-need items.
The donations were delivered to Copper Gate Apartments, a complex just down the road from Lune To Go, where many residents had to evacuate.
Kyle Wilson, a resident of the complex, expressed his gratitude for the support.
“Actions speak louder than words. At the end of the day, it’s about what you do, not what you say,” Wilson said.
Wilson highlighted the importance of community support during difficult times.
“A pair of gloves, pair of socks. People might not be able to afford it so, corporations, businesses, small businesses, they go out of their way to help people. That means a lot to me,” Wilson said.
Hashem remains committed to reopening Lune To Go for the community he cares about deeply.
“Stay strong, we’re going to get through this together,” Hashem said.
