Flags to be lowered Wednesday in remembrance of Rev. Jesse Jackson

SPOKANE, Wash. — Mayor Lisa Brown has ordered flags at all city facilities to be lowered to half-staff Wednesday to honor Rev. Jesse Louise Jackson, the civil rights icon who died recently.

The city’s directive aligns with Gov. Bob Ferguson’s order that state and U.S. flags at all state agency facilities be lowered in remembrance of Jackson, a lifelong champion of justice and prominent figure in the Civil Rights Movement.

“Throughout his life, Reverend Jackson promoted peace and justice. I had the honor of meeting him at an event at Gonzaga University and was inspired by his commitment to racial and economic justice,” Brown said. “He challenged our country to live up to its highest ideals, and his legacy will continue to inspire us to build a more just and inclusive future.”

The flags will be lowered Wednesday, March 11, and remain at half-staff until sunset. City officials encourage anyone with a flag outside their home or business to join in this recognition to honor Jackson’s memory and contributions to civil rights.

Jackson’s efforts improved the lives of underserved communities across the United States, and his work included prominent ties to Washington state.
