First-time homebuyer age hits record high of 40 in latest survey

WASHINGTON – The National Association of Realtors has released its annual survey, highlighting a significant trend in the housing market. The age of first-time homebuyers has reached an all-time high of 40 years.

The survey covers transactions from July 2024 to June 2025. It also reveals that the median age for any homebuyer is now 59 years old.

Additionally, only 24% of all buyers have children younger than 18 living at home, which the association notes is an all-time low.

These findings provide insight into the changing dynamics of homeownership in the United States.

The increase in age for first-time buyers and the decline in families with children purchasing homes are notable trends in the current housing market.
