BOISE, Idaho — As the United States prepares to celebrate its 250th birthday in 2026, residents are encouraged to join the First Day Hikes event on January 1, 2026. The Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation announced over 1,000 events nationwide, inviting everyone to explore state parks.
America’s State Parks President Paul McCormack highlighted the importance of these events.
“State Parks across the country protect and provide access to the landscapes, stories and places that create the fabric of our country,” he said.
First Day Hikes began in 1992 at Massachusetts’ Blue Hills Reservation State Park and have since become a nationwide tradition. Idaho’s parks will host a variety of hikes, offering different trail lengths and difficulty levels.
Susan Buxton, Idaho Parks and Recreation Director, expressed excitement about the upcoming events.
“As we welcome the new year there is no better place to make memories then on the trail,” she said.
Farragut State Park in Athol will feature a guided 2-mile hike to the Buttonhook Viewpoint Overlook, starting at 10 a.m. A Dutch Oven program will follow the hike.
Hells Gate State Park in Lewiston offers self-guided hiking from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Lucky Peak State Park in Boise will have ranger-led nature walks with four scheduled hikes between 10 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. Hot chocolate and cider will be available for $1 during the festivities.
Eagle Island State Park in Eagle will provide self-guided hiking and complimentary hot chocolate at the Visitor Center, open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Harriman State Park in Island Park is hosting a guided 1-mile snowshoe trek along the John Muir Trail, starting at 11 a.m. Snowshoes will be available for rent.
These hikes offer a unique opportunity to enjoy Idaho’s public lands and start the new year with a refreshing outdoor experience.
