UPDATE: July 18, 2025 2:10 p.m.

Spokane County Fire District #3 received a call around 11:08 a.m. this morning for a small fire near the 16900 block of Cheney-Spokane Road.

Dustin Flock, the Division Chief for the department, said that initial access to the fire was tricky because of the rocky terrain.

Crews fought the fire for a few hours and received support of a dozer from the Department of Natural Resources, as well as resources from the City of Spokane, Spokane County and the City of Cheney.

At around 12:43 p.m., Ryan Rodruck, communications manager with the Department of Natural Resources says that the fire had grown to around 10 acres.

Crews are currently setting up lines and making good progress, according to Flock. Their goal is to contain the fire as much as possible before winds pick up around 2 p.m.

Brush and trees were damaged and the fire brushed against the railroad tracks, which may have to be evaluated.

Flock said that there are about twelve structures north of the fire that would threatened if the wind blew it far enough that way, but that if teams are successful in created containment lines to the north, it would not be an issue.

Crews will stay around the fire for the rest of the day, according to Flock, and would potentially stay overnight to monitor the fire if needed.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Department of Natural Resources.
