Firefighters gain access to 20-acre wildfire on Canfield Mountain after deadly shooting

COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho – Fire crews are now able to respond to a reported 15- to 20-acre wildfire burning on Canfield Mountain near Coeur d’Alene.

According to the Idaho Department of Lands, crews were previously unable to access the area due to safety concerns related to the shooting incident in which two firefighters were killed and another was injured. Access was granted around 7:30 p.m.

Crews estimate the fire to be between 15 and 20 acres in size, burning in steep terrain with numerous snags.

IDL said additional resources, including aircraft, heavy equipment, water tenders, engines, hand crews, and a Type 3 Incident Management Team, have been ordered and are expected to begin work on the fire tomorrow.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
