UPDATE: July 10, 2025 9:09 a.m.
Firefighters have contained the wildland fire in the West Clarkston area, which threatened homes, property and livestock.
They plan to remain on scene today to continue mop-up efforts and hot spot monitoring to ensure the fire does not ignite.
Asotin County Fire District #1 said that the fire had escalated quickly because of the Red Flag weather conditions: high temperatures, low humidity and strong winds. These conditions fueled rapid growth and pushed the flames southeast towards Amity Lane, which put several homes in danger.
Emergency responders responded to a 911 call about a woman who was trapped by the fire while on an ATV. Firefighters were able to locate her and provide medical evaluation before determining that she was unharmed.
By 5 p.m. firefighters had contained the fire, although crews remained on scene until about 11 p.m. to monitor for hot spots.
Multiple agencies responded to the emergency, including Asotin County Fire District #1, fire crews from Lewiston, Clarkston, Asotin, Wheatland Fire District, Garfield County, Blue Mountain, Whitman County Fire District 14, and the Washington State Department of Natural Resources.
Asotin County Fire District #1 Chief Noel Hardin credited the rapid response and teamwork of the regional crews for bringing the fire under control within hours. He also gave credit to the support of aerial resources, including three helicopters, two single-engine air tankers, and a bulldozer provided by the Department of Natural Resources.
65 firefighters worked to fight the fire and no injuries were reported, according to Asotin County Fire District #1.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but Asotin County Fire District #1 said it is believed to be related to farm equipment.
