Fire restrictions start July 1 on Eastern Washington public lands

OLYMPIA, Wash. – The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) announced new restrictions to reduce wildfire risks on Eastern Washington lands starting July 1.

These measures include limits on campfires, target shooting and vehicle use to protect public safety and wildlife habitats, WDFW said in a release.

“This year’s forecast shows an increased risk of wildfires statewide, so it’s incredibly important to recreate responsibly and prevent possible wildfires while visiting public lands this summer,” said Kevin Connally, WDFW’s Lands Division Manager.

Campfires, even in fire rings, are banned, though personal camp stoves fueled by propane or liquid petroleum are allowed.

Target shooting is restricted to sunrise until 10 a.m. at Methow and Asotin Creek Shooting Ranges until August 15. After that, all target shooting is prohibited through September 15.

Further restrictions include a ban on smoking outside enclosed vehicles, welding and operating chainsaws. Motor vehicles must stay on developed roads, with parking only allowed in designated areas or spots without vegetation within 10 feet of roadways.

Fireworks remain banned year-round on all WDFW-managed lands. The WDFW urges visitors to respect these rules to protect local communities and wildlife habitats.
