OREGON – Fire restrictions are set to begin on May 15 for all Bureau of Land Management (BLM) public lands across Oregon and Washington. As warmer, drier weather approaches, BLM urges visitors to adhere to the restrictions to prevent human-caused fires.
Starting May 15, activities like using fireworks, exploding targets, metallic targets, steel component ammunition, tracer or incendiary devices and sky lanterns will be prohibited.
BLM Oregon and Washington State Fire Management Officer, Jeff Fedrizzi, emphasized the increasing number of human-caused fires over the years. “Our first responders, local communities, and public lands will be safer if everyone follows fire restrictions and practices fire safety while out on public lands,” he said.
Violators of the prohibition may face fines up to $100,000 and/or imprisonment for up to 12 months. Those responsible for starting wildfires on federal lands could also be billed for fire suppression costs.
