WASHINGTON – With Halloween approaching this Friday, the state fire marshal is offering tips to ensure a safe celebration.
According to the fire marshal’s office, Halloween decorations are a major cause of seasonal fires. The National Fire Protection Association reports these decorations contribute to an average of 790 home fires annually. Last Halloween, Washington state experienced 11 building fires.
To enjoy a fun and safe Halloween, the fire marshal recommends choosing costumes made from flame-resistant or flame-retardant fabrics. Avoid costumes with long trailing pieces.
For lighting, use battery-operated candles or LED lights in Jack-o’-lanterns instead of real candles. If you must use real candles, use a long match or lighter and keep them away from anything flammable.
Additionally, keep all decorations away from open flames and heat sources. Ensure walkways and exits are well lit and free from obstacles. Finally, verify that all smoke alarms are functioning properly.
These precautions aim to prevent the wrong kind of trick from spoiling the Halloween fun.
