Fire danger remains high in Washington and Montana with strong winds

WASHINGTON – Cooler temperatures have arrived in the region, providing some relief from the extreme fire danger seen previously. However, strong winds continue to pose challenges for firefighting efforts.

Temperatures have dropped from the 90s and triple digits to the 70s and 80s across Washington and Montana. Miles City, Montana, is seeing temperatures peak at 93 degrees. Despite the cooler weather, wind gusts ranging from 20 to 30 miles per hour are contributing to elevated fire danger.

In Montana, Friday at around 12:00 p.m., wind gusts are expected to persist at around 20 to 21 miles per hour. A brief lull in heat and low humidity is anticipated today and tomorrow. However, wind gusts are expected to increase significantly by the end of the weekend.

In Washington, wind gusts are expected to remain in the 20 to 30 mile per hour range as the weekend approaches. Fire danger is expected to rise significantly as the new work week begins.

Residents are urged to remain cautious and stay informed about fire conditions as the region continues to navigate the challenges posed by fire season.
