SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. – A fire broke out at a metal foundry in Spokane Valley, leading to a significant emergency response.

Just before 5:00 p.m. on Monday, August 11, Spokane Valley Fire Department (SVFD) crews were dispatched to the scene at the Spokane Industrial Park, located in the 3800 block of N. Sullivan Rd.

SVFD said in a release that employees at the foundry reported risers and pallets inside Building 1 were burning, prompting an evacuation.

When SVFD crews arrived, they saw a column of smoke and upgraded the call to a working fire, which brought in additional units.

The foundry supervisor informed firefighters that certain materials on-site could react dangerously with water.

SVFD said firefighters carefully cooled and extinguished the burning casting materials. Employees then moved these materials outside for monitoring.

No employees or bystanders were injured. However, one firefighter was evaluated for heat exhaustion, and another received treatment for a foreign object in the eye.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
