
MOSCOW, Idaho – On December 21, 2025, the Moscow Fire Department quickly responded to a structure fire on South Main Street. The fire was reported at 8:31 a.m., and the first engine arrived within four minutes, according to a press release.
A passerby initially reported black smoke and flames near the roofline. The fire was found in a rooftop HVAC unit on the 200 block, not the initially reported 400 block.
Firefighters discovered an active natural gas leak in the HVAC unit. Efforts to shut off the gas at the unit were unsuccessful, but the supply was secured at the building’s main shutoff.
The fire was extinguished, and a thorough inspection showed no further damage inside the building. The fire is believed to have started in the HVAC unit and is considered accidental.
The Moscow Fire Department was assisted by the Moscow Police Department. Evacuation of nearby businesses and apartments was conducted, but no injuries were reported.
