SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. — A convicted felon attempted to stab a police dog with a knife during a domestic violence arrest on Saturday, March 28 in Spokane County, according to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office.
Mitchell D. Hyams, 25, was arrested after deputies responded to a domestic violence call at a mobile home park near South Geiger Boulevard and West Lawton Road around 11 p.m., the sheriff’s office said.
Deputies found Hyams hiding in a bathroom closet, where he refused to surrender despite multiple commands, according to the sheriff’s office. When a police dog made contact with his arm to pull him from the closet, Hyams swung a knife at the animal’s head and chest, narrowly missing, deputies said.
Deputies gained control of Hyams and placed him in handcuffs, the sheriff’s office said. He received medical attention and was transported to a hospital.
Deputies recovered two knives from the closet, according to the sheriff’s office. Neither the K9 nor any deputies were injured.
Deputies discovered Hyams had active felony and misdemeanor warrants and a history of being uncooperative with law enforcement, the sheriff’s office said.
Hyams was booked into the Spokane County Jail on new charges of attempting to harm a police dog, fourth-degree assault and resisting arrest, plus unrelated warrants, the sheriff’s office said.
