Federal funding freeze impacts Idaho schools’ preparations

IDAHO – A sudden freeze on federal funding is causing significant challenges for school districts across Idaho, just weeks before the new school year begins.

More than $33 million in federal education funding, initially set for release on July 1, was unexpectedly withheld. This has forced districts to rapidly reassess their budgets and staffing plans.

The funding freeze affects programs supporting migrant students, English learners and professional development for teachers. Some districts are managing to reassign staff rather than resort to layoffs, but leaders warn that the disruption could still influence pay and program delivery.

Idaho’s Department of Education is in communication with federal officials and is seeking clarification on the situation. In the meantime, local schools are scrambling to prepare for the return of students.
