WASHINGTON – The FDA has issued a warning about a rare but severe itching side effect linked to popular allergy medications. The affected medicines include well-known brands such as Zyrtec and Xyzal.

According to the FDA’s new safety warning, some patients who have taken these oral allergy medicines daily for extended periods have experienced severe itching once they ceased usage.

While the cases of this side effect are rare, some have been serious enough to require medical intervention, the FDA reported.

In response, the FDA is updating prescription information to include a new warning about this risk.
