Family turns in murder suspect in potential death penalty case

Tyler Robinson’s arrest came just 33 hours after the murder, according to the FBI. Former FBI agent Rich Kolko shared that surveillance video and media distribution of suspect images were crucial to the arrest. Robinson was reportedly turned in by his family after they recognized him from the photos.

Kolko noted the difficulty faced by Robinson’s father, a former law enforcement officer and now a minister, in turning in his own child. This case may become a death penalty case, with the father potentially testifying.

Kolko commented on the potential for a plea deal, saying it’s too early to tell, especially with calls for the death penalty. Robinson could face both federal and state charges, and the death penalty might be considered in both.

Kolko added that despite Robinson being in custody, law enforcement’s work continues. They are now investigating the planning of the crime and looking for any co-conspirators involved before, during or after the incident. The focus is on building a solid case against Robinson.
