SPOKANE, Wash. — A Spokane boxing coach was shot and killed Sunday morning while trying to protect a young girl from harassment on East Wellesley.
Dylan Bundy-Gray was shot multiple times after confronting two boys who were harassing a young girl walking down the street, according to his family. Gray and the two boys got into a fight, and that’s when he was shot.
The 16-year-old suspect Onyx Deligt made his first court appearance and is being tried as an adult. He faces charges of second-degree murder and first-degree assault and is expected to be back in court next week.
Gray was a boxer and coach at Spokane Boxing for four years and leaves behind a wife and four sons. Rick Welliver, the gym’s owner, said Gray was an exceptional person who cared deeply about others.
“Salt of the earth, great coach, great communicator. Was always safety first, the priority would be the boxer, He cared, he was a good human being,” Welliver said.
Welliver said Gray always set a great example for everyone at the gym of how to treat others. Gray also brought his sons to the gym, and Welliver hopes he can support them through this tragedy.
“We offer this gym to anyone that wants to come in. Girl, guy, gay, straight, black white, young, old, cop or convict. Everyone is welcome here. This is a place where people heal and we’re going to be there for the family no matter what,” Welliver said.
Welliver said he bonded with Gray over the years they spent together. He remembers Gray as one of the most giving people who would check in on everyone at the gym to see how they were really doing.
