MOSES LAKE, Wash. – Vandalism at rest areas in Washington, including the eastbound I-90 Schrag Rest Area, has become a costly issue.
A photo from the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) shows heavy damage after someone flushed an explosive down the rest stop toilet near Moses Lake.
This type of destruction occurs about once a year at rest areas, according to a release by WSDOT.
From July 2024 through May 2025, vandalism like this has cost nearly $60,000 statewide.
WSDOT said the expense diverts maintenance crews from other critical work, such as fixing potholes or repairing guardrails.
