EVERGREEN, Colo. – A shooting at Evergreen High School on Wednesday resulted in the death of one student and several others injured. Authorities reported that a student opened fire just after noon, shooting two classmates before turning the gun on himself. The shooter later died in the hospital.
Two other students remain hospitalized. One is in critical condition, while the other is stable. A fourth student was also taken to the hospital with injuries that remain unknown at this time.
Senator John Hickenlooper commented on the situation, expressing frustration over the current state of the nation.
“The country is divided. There’s a lot of bitterness. Violence is no solution, and it’s very, very, very frustrating, especially with kids, that somehow, they’re feeling that this is their only way, their solution,” said Hickenlooper.
Colorado Governor Jared Polis released a statement calling the shooting “devastating” and expressed his condolences to the victims and their families.
The FBI and ATF have joined the ongoing investigation. Authorities have revealed that the 16-year-old shooter reloaded a revolver handgun several times during the incident.
Jacki Kelley from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office discussed the investigation into the shooter’s background.
“He was radicalized to an extremist network and clearly we take that very seriously, there’s obviously a lot of work that has to go into looking at his phone, looking at his social media pages, searching his room, searching his backpack. There’s just…searching his locker,” said Kelley.
