Evacuation levels downgraded for Spokane County wildfire near Keeney Road, Washington Road

Update on 2 p.m. – Firefighters say some evacuation levels have been lifted or downgraded, according to Spokane Regional Emergency Communications.

Spokane County Emergency Management reports that areas north of Washington Road are now all clear.

The area south of Washington Road to the 14400 block of South Keeney Road, and east of Keeney to Highway 195, has been downgraded to Level 2.

However, areas south of Washington Road and west of Keeney Road remain under a Level 3 (Go Now) evacuation order.

Update on 1:32 – Fire officials said the forward progression of the fire has been stopped, and the blaze has been knocked down.

According to Spokane County Fire District 3, the area between the 13000 and 14400 blocks of South Keeney Road has been downgraded to Level 2 – Be Set!

Level 2 means residents should be prepared to leave at a moment’s notice. If you or anyone at your location needs extra time, or if you have pets or livestock, you are strongly encouraged to evacuate now.

Update on 12:53 p.m. – Spokane County Fire District 3 reported that structures are being threatened by the four acre fire, which is burning on mixed fuels.

The level 3 (Go Now!) evacuation order is still in place for areas a 1/2 mile north of 13600 block of S Keeney Road, Spokane.

Update on 12:18 p.m. – Spokane County Fire District 3 firefighters said people living between the 12400 and 13700 blocks of South Keeney Road, including residents on Diamond Lane and Mindrup Meadows Lane, as well as residents in the James Slavin Conservation Area, need to evacuate as well.

The James T. Slavin Conservation Area spans 628 acres in the West Plains’ Rosa Butte area, featuring diverse landscapes and habitats.

According to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, this area is crucial for elk calving and lies along waterfowl migratory routes. It includes a five-acre lake, seasonal ponds, and a wetland-stream corridor.

Originally published on June 20 at 12:13 p.m. – SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. – Level 3 (Go Now) evacuations have been issued for a brush fire burning near the James T. Slavin Conservation Area in Spokane County.

According to Spokane County Fire District 3, evacuation orders have been issued for a half-mile north of the fire’s location, with Keeney Road serving as the eastern boundary.

Fire crews say one structure is currently threatened, and the fire is estimated at three to four acres in size.

Level 3 means go now. You are in immediate danger. Even if you don’t see the threat, follow your evacuation plan and leave immediately. Delaying could cost lives. If you stay, rescue may not be possible.
