Elmore County vote discrepancy prompts review

BOISE, Idaho – A potential vote discrepancy in Elmore County has prompted a review by the Idaho Secretary of State’s Office. The issue emerged after the Elmore County Clerk’s Office reported a mismatch between the number of ballots cast and the number of voters in the November 4, 2025, election.

Following a review, it was found that about 300 ballots were not tallied in the final results. Secretary of State Phil McGrane expressed concern over the situation.

“We are taking this matter seriously and will pursue every available path to ensure the will of the voters is accurately reflected in the results,” McGrane said. “Every vote matters, and we are committed to the accuracy and integrity of Idaho’s elections.”

The Secretary of State’s Office is coordinating with the Elmore County Clerk, and its elections team will visit Elmore County to assess the issue. The Elmore County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office and the Idaho Attorney General’s Office are also involved to ensure compliance with Idaho law. During this process, the Elmore County Sheriff’s Office is securing all ballots.

Elmore Clerk Shelley Essl emphasized the commitment to election accuracy. “This discrepancy does not meet or reflect our standards, and we will work with the candidates, the Secretary of State’s Office and all others involved so that voters can have confidence in the final outcome,” Essl said.

The situation is developing, and the Secretary of State’s Office will provide updates as more information becomes available.
