SPOKANE, Wash. – Educators, administrators and safety leaders gathered at the Spokane Convention Center to discuss strategies for keeping students safe.

Randy Moore, Director of Spokane Public Schools’ Campus Safety, emphasized the importance of creating a secure environment where students can trust the adults around them.

“Building those relationships in our schools are most important because safety is our first priority in the district,” Moore said.

The event included discussions on the reasons behind school shootings.

Forensic psychologist Dr. Manny Tau pointed out that such violence is not solely driven by bullying or video games. Instead, he believes a lack of connection plays a significant role.

Dr. Tau explained that making a child feel emotionally uncared for can contribute to violent behavior. The goal of the gathering was to provide educators with the tools to identify warning signs early and maintain schools as safe learning environments.

Moore encouraged individuals to reach out to campus safety personnel, counselors or principals if they feel the need to talk.

“You can go to your campus safety personnel or your counselors or principals, and find that person that you can trust. We would love to talk to them if there’s anything going on,” they said.
