Eastern State Hospital shooter identified, cause of death confirmed

MEDICAL LAKE, Wash. – The Spokane County Medical Examiner confirmed the identities and cause of deaths of the two people who died at Eastern State Hospital on September 27 after a man .

The man’s name was Sethaniel Bunch. He was 24 years old. He died from a gunshot wound to the head and his death was ruled as a suicide by the medical examiner.

The security guard’s name was Colleen Bass. She was 57 years old. She died of multiple gunshot wounds and her death was ruled as a result of homicide by the medical examiner.

The shooting prompted , including Washington Governor Bob Ferguson, Washington House Speaker Laurie Jinkins, president of the Western Federation of State Employees Mike Yestramski and a general statement by the Washington State Department of Health and Human Services.

“I’m meeting with the team as we learn more about what happened. My condolences to the victim and their family, and my heart goes out to the staff. We’re working to ensure our hardworking team at Eastern State has the support that they need,” said Ferguson.
