KOOTENAI COUNTY, Idaho – One person died and another was left with severe injuries after they failed to turn on a service road near the Horsehaven Airstrip while driving an ATV and went over a cliff, according to the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office.
The crash happened on Forest Service Road 209, east of Coeur d’Alene, and was reported to deputies on September 20 around 9:30 p.m.
A Life Flight helicopter was called to bring the ATV riders to the hospital but was unable to land due to excessive dust and dry conditions.
Deputies said that ATV riders had likely failed to make a turn on the forest service road and drove over a cliff.
The driver was declared dead at the scene. The passenger had severe injury.
Kootenai County Fire and Rescue watered down the landing zone so that the Life Flight helicopter could land. They succeeded and brought the injured ATV passenger to Kootenai Health.
Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office says that the passenger remains in serious condition.
Deputies believe that alcohol and illegal drugs played a role in the crash.
