SPOKANE, Wash. — Earth Day celebrations continue this weekend with the Earth Day Block Party, featuring sustainability-focused services and programs designed to engage the community in environmental awareness. One of the featured services is the Mend-It Cafe, a free community program run by Spokane Zero Waste that invites residents to bring up to three clothing items in need of repair.”The goal for the Mend-It Cafe is to teach people mending and repair and to really understand materials and how they impact our environment,” said Elyse Hochstadt, executive director of the Mend-It Cafe. “Sixty percent of all clothing made today is made from synthetic fossil fuel-based materials, and those are just really bad for the environment.”The event also includes a free bike sale, free food, live music and a community art project. The Earth Day Block Party is Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at West Central Abbey, 1832 W. Dean Ave.
