DSHS warns Washington EBT users of potential card theft

OLYMPIA, Wash. – The Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) has issued an urgent advisory for Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cardholders in the state.

According to DSHS, cardholders should watch out for this message: “EBT cardholder, your benefits are in danger of theft. Act immediately. Change the PIN or replace your card by calling the phone number on the back of your card or the DSHS office.”

If cardholders see this message, DSHS urges them to take action by calling the phone number on the back of the card or visiting a DSHS office.

For added security, DSHS recommends not sharing your EBT card number or PIN with anyone who contacts you by phone or text. They also suggest changing your PIN monthly and choosing a hard-to-guess number.

Regularly checking your EBT account for unauthorized charges is advised. If you suspect your card has been compromised, deactivate or replace it immediately, DSHS said in a release.
