Driver sentenced for killing pedestrian in Downtown Spokane incident

SPOKANE, Wash. – Jarae D. Schreiber, 34, was sentenced Friday in Spokane County Superior Court to 15 months in prison. A jury found her guilty of vehicular homicide last month.

The incident occurred in June 2023 in Downtown Spokane. According to court documents, Schreiber was driving through an intersection with a green light when she hit a man crossing the street with two others. The victim later died in the hospital.

During sentencing, the state sought a 20-month sentence, citing Schreiber’s failure to notice the pedestrians in daylight. They noted her lane change towards them exhibited carelessness.

The defense requested alternative sentencing for Schreiber, noting that she was a first-time offender and suggesting probation. However, Judge Annette Plese denied these options, emphasizing the deadly outcome of Schreiber’s actions.

Schreiber was also ordered to undergo alcohol and mental health treatment, and will serve 12 months in community custody after her release.
