SPOKANE, Wash. – The YWCA Spokane has launched its “Hope for the Holidays” campaign to support families affected by domestic violence. This effort aims to assist 90 families struggling during the Christmas season.
The Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence reported that 49 people have died from homicide in Spokane County between 2014 and 2024. Since 1997, more than 1,200 people have died from domestic violence in the area.
Jemma Riedel-Johnson from YWCA Spokane emphasized the organization’s mission. “Our mission is eliminating racism and empowering women,” she said. “The majority of our services are coming along survivors and meeting them where they’re at.”
Riedel-Johnson highlighted the importance of support systems. “It’s important for folks to know that they aren’t actually alone,” she said. “Help and support is out there.”
The “Hope for the Holidays” campaign is part of YWCA Spokane’s ongoing work. Riedel-Johnson explained, “We are supporting a number of families from each of those different programs.” She added that providing gift cards empowers individuals. “Handing a survivor a gift card…is really empowering because that individual gets to choose what their present’s going to be,” she said.
If you would like to help, gifts can be dropped off at the YWCA on December 3 and 4, from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The address is 930 North Monroe Street in Spokane.
For those experiencing domestic violence or wanting to assist someone who is, two helplines are available. You can call 509-326-2255 or text 509-220-3725 for support.
