Dishman Hills sees 250 acres of trees removed to cut wildfire risk

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has removed 250 acres of trees from the Dishman Hills natural area to reduce wildfire risk for the upcoming summer.

The removal process began back in October, carried out in partnership with the Spokane County Parks Department and the Spokane County Wildfire Mitigation Coalition.

The DNR emphasized the collaborative effort, stating, “We’re proud of the work the agency has done proud of the work of our cooperators.”

The primary goal of this project was to thin out the dense forests in Dishman Hills, which would help in lowering the amount of fuels that could ignite potential wildfires.

The thinning process also brings ecological benefits, according to the DNR.

The department noted that it reduces water and nutrient competition and lowers the area’s susceptibility to insects.
