WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced plans to end temporary protected status (TPS) for Honduran and Nicaraguan migrants in the United States. This status has been in place for 25 years.
Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem stated that conditions in Honduras have improved, which influenced the decision. She added that TPS for Nicaraguan residents was not intended to last this long.
The protections were initially offered to migrants who had to leave due to a hurricane in the area. The decision follows DHS’s termination of the same status for Haitian and Venezuelan migrants.
However, a federal judge in Brooklyn has blocked the Trump administration’s attempt to end TPS for Haitian migrants.
