COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho – A demolition crew working in the 1000 block of E. Lakeside Ave. uncovered a surprising discovery in a residence basement at around 12:15 p.m. today. The crew found a safe containing roughly six pounds of electronic blasting caps.

According to the Coeur d’Alene Police Department, the project manager transported the blasting caps to the Coeur d’Alene Police Department for disposal. Due to uncertainty about their condition, officers secured the blasting caps in the lobby, prompting an immediate evacuation of nearby individuals to a safe distance.

Local businesses were alerted, and the street in front of the police department was temporarily closed. As a precaution, Ramsey Elementary was placed on safety hold.

The Spokane Bomb Squad was contacted and successfully took custody of the blasting caps for proper disposal. The Coeur d’Alene Police Department expressed gratitude for the assistance, stating, “We’re grateful for our partnership with the Spokane Bomb Squad and their assistance with this incident.”

The police department urges community members who encounter suspicious items that could be explosive to leave them in place and contact the authorities. Officers will ensure the items are safely managed and disposed of properly.
