Dangerous Latah Valley intersection to get safety redesign starting Monday

SPOKANE, Wash. — A construction project will begin Monday to redesign a dangerous intersection in Latah Valley that has been the site of multiple crashes.

The project will completely redo the intersection at US 195 and Meadowlane Road, eliminating direct highway crossings. The new design will require drivers to use J-turns to cross or change directions.

According to the Department of Transportation, seven car crashes occurred at the intersection in 2025, with one crash already reported this year.

“About once a month, we see an accident,” said Dennis Floyd, who has lived near the intersection for almost a year.

Floyd said poor judgment by drivers contributes to the crashes.

“It’s oftentimes poor human judgment when a person thinks that they can get onto the highway and they’ve got plenty of space, and they really don’t realize the speed with which oncoming traffic is approaching,” Floyd said.

The project will add acceleration and deceleration lanes for safer merging and turning. Construction will also change the entrance and exit for cars coming from Eagle Lane Boulevard.

During construction, the road will be reduced to one lane. The project is expected to be completed by mid to late July.

Floyd, who currently avoids the intersection, said he takes alternate routes for safety.

“Well, a lot of times what we’ll do is take an alternate route. We’ll go over to the intersection, and rather than trying to cross it, we’ll go down one, one more, interchange and go up Patch Road, onto the south Hill. That way we’re not going across the freeway,” Floyd said.
