SPOKANE, Wash. – The government has dismissed the criminal case against Dr. Werschler and his businesses, including Spokane Dermatology Clinic, with prejudice, meaning the case cannot be refiled.
This decision underscores Dr. Werschler’s innocence, according to a press release. The case began when bookkeeper Carol Casilla embezzled over $1 million from the companies through a fraud scheme involving COVID loan funds.
Casilla pleaded guilty to wire fraud and was sentenced to two years in prison. She falsely accused Dr. Werschler of complicity to reduce her sentence.
Forensic analysis cleared Dr. Werschler, showing no improper use of COVID funds. The government agreed to dismiss the charges and settle potential civil claims for $1.4 million, significantly less than the $3.5 million initially cited.
Dr. Werschler expressed relief, saying, “This ordeal has been emotionally and professionally devastating for me, my wife, and our employees. We are extremely pleased to put it behind us.” He reassured patients that the case did not affect the healthcare provided at Spokane Dermatology Clinic.
