Cougar Collective rallies to support Washington State athletes

PULLMAN, Wash. – The Cougar Collective, a nonprofit organization at Washington State University, is taking action to support student athletes and coaches through Name Image Likeness (NIL) initiatives.

Washington State University students and fans are rallying together as they watch larger universities spend big money to recruit their favorite players and coaches.

Jaden Long, a WSU student, expressed his frustration.

“It sucks. It sucks for sure. You know, obviously like I always talk to my friends about it if they want me. Just stayed here. If everyone stayed here and just maybe seen what would have happened, maybe even a couple of years or something. But obviously it’s unrealistic at this point,” said Long.

The community at Washington State University is known for its strong school spirit. However, some students feel disappointment, especially regarding the football program.

“I feel like the school spirit here is really strong, but pertaining to the football specifically, I like people are very disappointed with that,” said Aisha Barley-Pidot, another WSU student.

These emotions are leading to a surge in support for the Cougar Collective. Tim Brandle from the Cougar Collective shared his experience.

“My phone’s been going bonkers… We’ve had over 100 new members in the past 24 hours. I told the board of directors a couple days ago, I don’t think my phone has EVER been this hot. EVER,” said Brandle.

Brandle emphasized the determination and resilience of the Cougar community.

“We’re the type who trudged up hill both ways to get to campus and back. In the snow, in the wind, in the rain, and then for some reason it would be 100 degrees in September,” said Brandle.

He believes that when Cougar fans unite, they can overcome any challenge.

“We’re ready, willing and able to withstand this punch,” said Brandle.

Brandle called on fans to support the student athletes.

“We have the opportunity to make a difference for our student athletes. IF you’re proud of that red you’re wearing, that crimson you’re wearing, that hat that you’re wearing, now’s the time to put some skin in the game,” said Brandle.

The collective effort is bringing renewed hope to Washington State University during a challenging time. Marley Fox, a WSU student, recognized the importance of this unity.

“Overall I think it sucks but at the same time I think it’s great that we all like working together and supporting our sports teams,” said Fox.

Long also shared his thoughts on the future.

“If it’s what are they going to do for Washington state? And so they have to do and so I gather, at least got a plan for going forward at this point,” said Long.

Despite the uncertainty, Cougar fans are looking forward to their upcoming bowl game in two weeks. Whether they win or lose, the Cougar spirit remains strong.
