Convicted felon arrested in Montana following domestic violence attack

KALIPELL, Mont. — A four-time convicted felon was arrested in Montana this week after allegedly pointing a loaded handgun at three people and threatening to kill them during a domestic violence incident on Spokane’s West Plains last month, according to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office.

Conner J. Hays, 31, was booked into Spokane County Jail on Monday after Major Crimes Detectives traveled to Kalispel, Montana, to transport him back to face multiple felony and misdemeanor charges, deputies said.

The incident occurred March 27 at approximately 11:15 p.m. at a residence on West Jacobs Road, according to sheriff’s deputies. Hays arrived armed with a pistol to confront his girlfriend, who had stopped answering his calls after learning he had been unfaithful, investigators said.

During the confrontation, Hays pointed the loaded pistol at three victims while threatening to kill them and struck one male victim in the head with the handgun, according to witness statements. The situation ended when Hays set the weapon down and one victim gained control of it, telling him to leave, deputies said.

Detectives developed probable cause to charge Hays with three counts of felony assault and harassment with threats to kill, according to the sheriff’s office. He may face an additional felony charge of unlawful possession of a firearm.

Court records show Hays has four previous felony convictions and multiple misdemeanor domestic violence convictions. At his first appearance hearing, Commissioner T. Rugel reduced his bond from $150,000 to $25,000.

The investigation remains ongoing, according to the sheriff’s office.
