SPOKANE, Wash. – Congressman Michael Baumgartner of the 5th Congressional District is pushing for new legislation targeting the high salaries of college athletic coaches.
According to the official document, the proposed bill aims to amend Title IV of the Higher Education Act to establish a salary cap for football coaches. The cap would limit compensation to no more than 10 times the tuition for first-time undergraduates.
Using Washington State University as an example, the cap would restrict coaches to earning no more than $140,000 a year.
Currently, the highest-paid college football coach is Kirby Smart from the University of Georgia, earning approximately $13 million annually, with the school’s tuition being about $30,000 per year.
This new legislation could have a significant impact on college athletics and the local community, ensuring funds are more equitably distributed in educational institutions.
