OLYMPIA, Wash. – Washington Congressman Michael Baumgartner announced today that he will be serving as a member of the Canada-United States Interparliamentary Group (IPG) for the 119th Congress.

He was appointed by House Speaker Mike Johnson.

The Canada-United States IPG began in the late 1950s, held its first meeting in 1959 and has met annually since that time.

Baumgartner’s release says that he will focus on shared priorities like strengthening cross-border trade and travel, enhancing energy cooperation, addressing continental supply chain resilience and advancing joint efforts on environmental and security initiatives.

“The United States and Canada share a deeply rooted partnership based on common democratic values, economic integration, and security cooperation,” Baumgartner said.

“From energy and trade to border management and defense, the U.S.-Canada relationship is essential to the prosperity and stability of North America. Representing a northern border district, I am honored to serve in this role and look forward to meeting with Canadian legislators to advance policies that benefit both our countries,” he continued.

Other members of the Canada-United States IPG include United States Representatives, Jack Bergman, Peter Stauber, Claudia Tenney, Brad Finstad, Nicholas Langworthy and Bill Huizenga, who will serve as the chair.

All of the members of the Canada-United States IPG listed in Baumgarnter’s release are members of the Republican party.
