Comstock Pool closure disrupts summer plans for local kids

SPOKANE, Wash. – A burst pipe at Comstock Pool has temporarily put summer swimming plans on hold for local children eager to dive into their vacation.

Benny Larsen, a local student, expressed his disappointment, saying, “I’m disappointed because school is just out.”

Benny was looking forward to a summer full of swimming, but the pool’s closure has delayed his plans.

“I am a very frequent swimmer. I love swimming. It’s one of my favorite activities,” Benny said.

Comstock Pool, a popular spot for local swimmers, is undergoing repairs after a pipe burst late Friday night. The Spokane Parks and Recreation Department informed us that they are working on the repairs and hope to reopen the pool within a week.

Benny shared his frustrations about the timing of the closure.

“This is horrible. I mean the Comstock Pool is amazing…it’s close to my house,” he said.

He added that any other season besides summer would have been a better time to fix the pool.

“Summer is the perfect time for swimming, they should’ve fixed it,” Benny stated.

The Parks and Recreation Department explained that they prepare for the pool’s opening a month in advance, but maintenance issues can occur unexpectedly.

Junia Killian, another frequent swimmer at Comstock Pool, also expressed her disappointment.

“We go there like once every week, at least,” Junia said, adding that she sometimes swims for three hours a day.

“I feel really sad because then I won’t be able to go swimming,” she stated.

Both Benny and Junia hope the repairs won’t take longer than anticipated.

Junia emphasized, “I really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really want to go to the pool.”

The kids expressed that students deserve a chance to swim and refresh after a long school year. Once Comstock Pool reopens, Benny is eager to return to his favorite spot.

“Very excited. When I swim, it feels like I’m floating and flying,” he said.
