LIBERTY LAKE, Wash. – Across Liberty Lake and throughout Spokane County, small wooden boxes filled with food are providing free meals to those in need.
Noelle Otterson-Loperco, a local organizer, emphasized the community’s readiness to help.
“This is one of our little three food pantries. There are several all over Liberty Lake, Spokane County, Kootenai County,” said Otterson-Loperco.
These colorful neighborhood boxes may be small but they make a big impact for many, offering essential meals.
“As temperatures get colder, people are looking for heartier, more fulfilling, sustaining meals. Oftentimes these little pantries have protein, beans, pastas, pasta sauces, things to make that are going to last a family of four or five for a few days,” said Otterson-Loperco.
Managing these pantries became a mission for Otterson-Loperco as food insecurity grows due to SNAP cuts and the ongoing federal shutdown.
“The sheer number of little three food pantries that exist between Spokane and Kootenai counties definitely aids with that not wanting to be seen or feeling shameful. I would also add that visiting these little pantries is super fun for kids. They love it. So if you’re not doing it for you necessarily, do it for them,” said Otterson-Loperco.
Beyond providing nutrition, Otterson-Loperco believes these pantries offer dignity and help remove the fear of shame that can accompany asking for help. She views her involvement as a calling to serve, not for recognition.
“This isn’t something that I’m working on for that gratification. It’s because this is what I’m called to do. This is an act of faith, and this is the call that God has placed on my heart, and so I’m responding to it. And it’s great to see the community respond in kind,” said Otterson-Loperco.
