Community members gather for ‘Walk for Peace’ in Spokane

SPOKANE, Wash. — Residents came together for an evening walk on Thursday to honor and celebrate the 2,300-mile trek by Buddhist monks from Texas to Washington D.C.

The local walk began at 5:15 p.m. at the Rotary Fountain in Riverfront Park. Participants embarked on a 10-block walk through downtown Spokane.

“All of the great speakers of the world have talked about how light and love are the way forward,” a participant said. “So let’s be lights in this darkness…then let’s look around and see how many lights there are.”

The group of monks, who walked from Texas to Washington D.C. in the name of peace, reached their destination on Wednesday. Thousands of people gathered to celebrate the conclusion of their 2,300-mile journey.
