Columbians Drum and Bugle Corps set for national tour

WASHINGTON – The Columbians Drum and Bugle Corps is preparing for their national tour, performing in competitions at NFL and high school stadiums across the U.S.

The group is part of Drum Corps International, known as “marching music’s major leagues.” Performers audition and dedicate months of nearly 10-hour daily rehearsals before hitting the road. Each show features unique uniforms for colorguard and musicians, original music, and field formations where members move around the field in a way that emphasizes parts of the music.

This year, the Columbians will present a show titled “Bloom,” featuring elements from the song “Go the Distance” from Disney’s “Hercules” and colorful flags and uniforms with bright flowers and pastel hues.

Columbians Corps Director James Haynes explained the show’s message, stating, “Just no matter where you’re at, show your colors, be bright, be beautiful, do all the things you’re supposed to do, don’t stay stagnant and still just because you’re not where you ultimately wanna be. Live your dreams and live your best life each spot you’re in your life and really encouraging that with our membership.”

He highlighted their supportive environment, adding, “It’s really just about creating an environment where people can come and use their skills and their talents and exceed what they can do in a high school environment and just see what goes beyond that.”

Performers come from across Washington State and as far as Oregon and Idaho. Drum Corps offers unique opportunities for high school and college students, though financial challenges arise from fees and travel expenses. Corps staff stressed the importance of community support to help provide these opportunities.

To support The Columbians, people can attend their “send-off show” at Ridgeline High School in Liberty Lake tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. or visit the Columbians Drums and Bugle Corps website to sponsor meals, travel, and other expenses.

In less than a month, they will perform at Lucas Oil Stadium for the Drum Corps International’s Open Class World Championships.
